The Technology Behind SiteCelerate

A major Insurance company in Malaysia was a victim of its own success! They had launched a secure online agents web self-service system that allows agents to among many others, submit new cases, check their commissions, view reports and keep up to date on the latest products and services. The system was built on a Tomcat application server with a Microsoft IIS web server using Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption.

It was a great success. Soon, the entire system slowed down to the point that it can no longer be accessed - especially during the end of the month when commissions are calculated. Frequent page time-outs or downloads time in excess of 1 minute was encountered.

This was due to a combination of SSL processing overheads, lack of bandwidth at the data-center and slow access speeds of the user's dial-up connections.

Arahe was brought in by a System Integrator partner to examine the situation. After discussions, a live test was conducted at the customer's data center and within a day, the SiteCelerate Web Acceleration System was configured and installed.

SiteCelerate was configured as both a Web application accelerator as well as an SSL accelerator for this deployment.

Test results were then collated and compared with the normal un-accelerated system, as follows:

The numbers clearly showed a performance increase of more than 4 times faster. In fact, measured bandwidth utilisation was 80% lower.

Immediately after completion of the test, the Insurance company procured and implemented SiteCelerate and currently no longer experiences the same problems and slow speeds it used to have.
